Mastering the art of habit formation
Each time you choose your habit over an excuse, you're voting for the person you want to become.
Welcome to the.Zee weekly drop on Habits
We unlock our potential only through consistent, positive actions and thoughts. We've all struggled with forming new habits, so here the best advice to ensure your success: Start ridiculously small. In fact choose a habit so tiny it seems almost laughable.
Spend 5 minutes daily imagining yourself successfully performing your new habit. Engage all your senses in this mental rehearsal.
Action for today:
Attaching new habits to an existing routine can help. In addition to that, seeing yourself as an achiever rewires the brain in the same way as actually completing the task does. So, whilst you clean your teeth today, close your eyes and picture your success.
It's easy to find an excuse to skip a workout, even though you know you'll feel better, fitter and healthier if you do it. So stop thinking about where you want to be in 6 months (weight loss, muscle building, run a marathon). What can you do today?
Action for today:
Get down and do one push-up. Yes, now; that's how you get started! And if you feel like doing more today, or tomorrow, then great, but doing one push-up a day is all you need to form the habit.
It is important to reward yourself mentally (even better if you say it/hear it out loud). That self-recognition releases endorphins that will help to start a positive feedback mechanism to success.
Action for today:
Is today your second day in a row doing something for your wellbeing? Then well done; that’s a habit. Reach round and give yourself a pat on the back for showing up for yourself. This isn’t a metaphor, really do it.
Remember, the key to successful habit formation is consistency (perfection will come over time).
